Successful Club Barbeque and Food Drive for Milpara on 20th April 2023

We had a very successful Food Drive for the Milpara Community House Food Bank. Thank you to the very generous people of Korumburra for supporting us. We estimate that over $1000 of non-perishable food stuffs were collected on the day as well as over $350 in cash donations. Thank you everyone!

Milpara Community House, in conjunction with Vinnies in Korumburra, does a great job of providing goods to needy people, but food supplies are getting low. Enter the Korumburra Lions Club who will be running the 5th Food Drive.

The great people of Korumburra have contributed nonperishable items including noodles, rice, pasta, pasta sauce, tinned tomatoes, tinned spaghetti, tinned meals and soup.

Community Assets

Rail Trail Shelter – Beautification and Refurbishment

With the Great Southern Rail Trail being extended from Leongatha to Nyora and passing right through our town of Korumburra, the Club is developing the Wayside Stop built by the Lions Club of Korumburra in 1999. The shelter and picnic area need TLC so we have started building a new garden area to beautify the area. New signage is required to direct visitors to the town as well as to points of interest on the Rail Trail in both directions. We have just been advised that we have been successful in getting a $3,000 Community Grant to provide additional Tables and Seating for the Shelter and Garden area. We hope to have these installed by September this year.

Community Youth

Music Scholarship for Korumburra Secondary College

The Club has continued with the music scholarship program at the Korumburra Secondary College. This year we are sponsoring four new 1/2 scholarships for music lessons in 2023. This is being done in conjunction with the music program that is run by the five major secondary schools in South Gippsland, working with the dedicated teaching staff. The scholarship would offer financial support to students who otherwise could not afford the lessons, instruments or music camps that are critical to the program’s structures. The South Gippsland Schools Music Program is seen as a valuable part of education for our community’s young people.

Anti-Cyber Bullying Program

Cyber-Bullying has become part of the lives of our children and grandchildren. The Lions Clubs of South Gippsland (Korumburra, Toora, Mirboo North, Leongatha and Strzelecki) have banded together to fund a program that provides strategies and teaches resilience to students. The program is delivered by “Dolly’s Dream” foundation and is being done in conjunction with the Victoria Police.

Sporting Scholarships

The Lions Club in conjunction with the Gippsland Sports Academy has agreed to sponsor two students with part golfing scholarships to improve their game as they look to make a career in this sport.

The Ross Smith Award this year went to Liam Thomas. Congratulations. The award is given to a student who gives they’re all across a with variety of activities. Well done.
